The Valkyries (daughters Of Odin)

Stop my genius! I hear a voice
That comes from the kingdoms where martial souls rejoice:
I hear the slaughter daughters
Call me to Odin's Palace:
Sitting in his blessed abode,
He soon drink the drink of the gods.
Life hours have elapsed,
I fall, but I will die smiling.
-Regner Lodbrok, the Krakumal.

As God of war, Odin sends his daughters to choose the fallen heroes.
Referred to as Valkyries, they serve in Valhalla serving the drink to the Einherjars.
Odin sends them to the fields of battle so that they elect those who will be killed.
The older Edda appoints twelve valkyrias and all concerned with things of the war.

Dios Tyr sent
Gondul and Skogul (Valkyries)
To choose a King
Ingve race
So he morara with Odin
In the vast Valhalla.

After the battle, the continuous skalde have described:

Then! Gondul
Indicating the horizon with his spear
He said to his sister:
Soon increased
The phalanx of the gods;
The Party of Odin
Hakon this guest.

The King saw to
The beautiful Virgin
Sitting on their horses
With their bright armor
Their shields in front of them,
Solemnly thoughtful.

The King heard
The words of her lips,
He saw them do the signal
With his pale hands,
And I speak as well:
Powerful goddesses,
We don't mereceríamos
We had chosen
A better luck?

Skogul replied:
Your enemies have fallen,
Your country is free,
Your reputation is pure;
We must now ride
Towards greener worlds
To tell Odin
That comes Hakon.

So the old Edda is expressed in the professional of the Vala:

He saw a few Valkyries
Who had travelled much:
They were prepared
To ride towards Godthjod.
Skuld wore the child,
Skogul second,
Hild accompanied Gondul
And Geirskogul.
Now I have already mentioned
All the Valkyries.
The daughters of Herjan were prepared
To ride on the Earth.

Like the Amazons in Greek mythology i the Valkyries (in old German Walkyrien) are the Amazons of Norse mythology. These women beautiful, virginal and forts were responsible for riding on the back of his horses on the battlefields to determine victory in the war and collect the dead to take them to the Vahalla. In German "Die Walküre" means literal way "that chooses the fallen". Another aspect was the ability to heal any wound.

The Valkyries, Warrior Virgin sent by OdIn to rescue the fallen in battle to lead them to Valhalla.

Valhalla or Palace of Odin was the heaven of the Norse warriors where the dead were waiting the final battle while they ate, drank and fought. This Golden Palace had roofs covered with shields, a structure of Spears and 540 gates that Warriors could go out and paraded to the great Final battle. The Valkyries, daughters of Odin (equivalent to Zeus) were responsible for serving beer and Mead fallen warriors while they waited to return to fight.

For any Warrior die did not imply a disgrace but a joy by being brought to Valhalla.

Be Warrior and die of old or ill was considered as something undignified and even cause for shame for them and their family.

The most famous Valkyrie was Brünnhilde for the Queen, having a force of more than a dozen of men, and above all their role in the works of Wagner the ring of the Nibelung. Other important Valkyries in legends are quarterfinals, tricolour, Hilda, Thruda, Hlók, Herfjotern, Ragyd, Gud, Skogul and Hrund each one with their attributes and qualities. The most beautiful of the Valkyries was Hnos.

The Valkyries were supernatural women who had several missions: living with Odin in the Golden Palace of Valhalla, where served beer to the shadows of the dead warriors; also entered the battle envelopes their horses, with armor and Spears, and assigned the victory and defeat - "Die Walküre" means literally "that chooses the fallen" - two Valkyries, Gunn and Rota, chose the men to death, accompanied by Skuld (need to), the youngest of the Norns, one of the three fates that make up the lives of men.

The Valkyries may have had special relations with warriors called berserkirberserkir, were likely to die in the battle and thus earn a place in Valhalla, where they spent the time fighting and drinking. who inspired by the fury of Odin in battle, despoiled of their armor to fight supernatural force. Certainly, the

Valhalla was depicted as a huge Golden Palace roof shields, a structure of Spears and 540 gates, each of which were paraded in columns toward the final battle of Ragnork.

The Valkyries, gods of the Norse pantheon, are known as Amazons of the Scandinavian tradition. Thus, shared with the Greek two of its main attributes: his dedication to the art of war and her virginity. However, the Valkyries suffered more deeply the wound of the Patriarchate, in such a way that their strength has declined through the various mythical stories, which have replaced their strongest attributes by others more suited to a figurehead as he is, in this and other traditions, women.

From the archetypal point of view, the Valkyries are one of the multiple representations of the female deity giver of life and death. Symbolically, these two realities are two sides of the same coin, in a way that, stirring among the ashes of the Matriarchy, we find goddesses who embody the power of granting both: in the case of the Norse Warrior his role was to decide on who should die and who should remain alive.

The same word "Valkyrie" in old German, means 'that chooses the fallen': in the heat of battle, when a warrior saw appear a Valkyrie, knew that his hour had come to only those destined to die could see these divinities. In addition to deciding on the fallen, the Valkyries, military expert, heading the armies and lend certain warriors (berserkir) a divine rage which made them practically invincible, granting them this victory please. Indeed some of their names (Hildr, Skuld, Gunnr, etc.) are compounds of "battle", "combat", "sword", "Fury" and "bravery", etc.

However, it seems that the idea that the military campaigns of the Scandinavian peoples were in the hands of a so fatal as the female goddesses was not precisely appropriate to a warlike society where they were part of the spoils: in this respect, it is necessary to point out that the various Germanic peoples maintained polygamy even during the high middle ages, when the majority had already converted to Christianity.

It is here where begins the disarmament of the Valkyries.

Firstly, strips of these divinities of their decision-making powers: daughters of Odin, become mere executor of his will. Of sovereign they become simple esbirras, granting victory or defeat not in virtue of his own archetypal power, but alliances of men with God.

Secondly, his Warrior function is diluted to detain them in the harem that Patriarchy had never intended to let them leave. Thus, after appearing above warriors, the Valkyries were responsible for transporting them to Valhalla, a Golden Palace where were the heroes who died in the battle.

And it is that, for the Nordic peoples, die in combat was an honor that even the gods themselves could participate, as they were deadly. In this way, once they arrived at Valhalla, the warriors were treated by the Valkyries, who stopped to have the power to lead their destinies to dispense Mead: Warrior whores, the maneuver is clear.

However, in the initial core of the myth of the Valkyries, it is possible to trace the freedom and the strength that these deities were symbol, freedom and strength that inspired the women's collective unconscious for centuries, and which may continue to inspire us today.

The key to these two powers lies in the virginity of the Valkyries. And is that, during the greater part of the story, the only way that women have of achieving sovereignty over our bodies has been, is, and perhaps will remain off-limits to sexual males.

Even though the so-called sexual revolution of the last century to strive, heterosexual intercourse has been the instrument of domination of the Patriarchate by excellence: through heterosexual intercourse his subordinate position, recalled women detained in the hazard that evil that despite them some, are perhaps the only ones that not we have been able to wrest. For this reason, most of the strong and sovereign divinities have always been Virgin women.

Another powerful aspect of the symbol is its sense of community. The Valkyries, like many other female deities, are a group of women acting together and benefit from each other. Despite having a leader, in this case the goddess Freya, share power without that this falls into one of them, something that does not usually happen in the case of the gods. Without leaving this tradition, it is possible to appoint several individual gods Odín, Thor (Loki…), but did not find a set of gods as homogeneous as the Valkyries.

In conclusion, it is interesting to note that the Valkyries were considered the most beautiful goddesses of the pantheon. As evidence, the ability to transform into swans, a powerful symbol of beauty and Majesty are recognized in some accounts.

This quality is the importance of its sovereignty, that the Valkyries would have remained untouched, in the beginning, despite the greed of men. However, the tradition ends up delivering them to several warriors, including a hero of the stature of Siegfried.

Powerful and should female deities at the same time, are acting archetypes in our unconscious; so I think that women must know and reinterpret them in our favour.
