A bag developed by NASA can transform any fluid, including the human urine in an isotonic drink with incredible nutritive properties.



Today the space shuttle Atlantis has taken off with destination to outer space. Among the new devices and technological resources that will be at the disposal of its crew is a bag, called "Forward Osmosis Bag" (FOB) which owns quasi-magic to transform any liquid in a rich and, above all, nutritious drink.


But if outside little, alchemical virtues of the FOB does not require energy resources to carry out its process, appearance which further reinforces its value in an environment where food survival could be a determining factor to make a space mission or not a success.


The key is, as its name indicates, the use of the process known as osmosis. "The osmosis is the natural diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane from a solution of lesser concentration to a solution of concentration." "The semipermeable membrane acts as a barrier that allows small molecules such as water to pass, while blocking most large molecules such as salts, sugars, starches, proteins, viruses, bacteria and parasites," explained NASA researchers.


Basically this synthetic technology is to transmute any liquid, including human urine (a fluid that never miss while we continue to exist), through the osmotic pressure, which causes a filtering in water molecules. Then they are also filtered with a concentrated sugar solution. This process takes between four and six hours, after which the liquid is ready to be eaten.
