The story is set in a world where there are psychic abilities through science and magic through religion. The main stage is City Academy, a fictional city in Japan, technology 30 years more advanced than the rest of the world and a population of 2.3 million inhabitants, most students who develop psychic abilities.

Kamijou Touma, is a student with a terrible bad luck, his right hand has a power called Imagine Breaker that can deny all kinds of supernatural powers, are psiquicos, magical or divine (which also nullifies their good luck). One day find a young woman hanging from his balcony called Index. She turns out to be a nun of the Church of England, which has implemented in its memory the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a collection of 103,000 books of magic with incredible powers. Eventually Touma is vera embroiled in the conflict of science and magic, where you find a large number of enemies and allies along the way.
