The supercomputer, christened with the name of Xiuhcoatl (fire in Nahuatl Serpent), is capable of performing approximately 18 trillion mathematical calculations per second (teraflops).
The team includes 170 servers that operate interconnected as computing nodes to achieve an enormous capacity for prosecutions, equivalent to a thousand last generation PC.
This supercomputer, ranked as the second most important in Latin America, is the first cluster (cluster) of hybrid in type, as it integrates conventional processors (Intel and AMD) as well as units of graphics processing with an emerging technology called GPGPU (General-Purpose Computation on Graphics Processing Units).
In total, Xiuhcoatl integrates 3 thousand 480 cores, plus a system of centralized storage with a capacity of approximately 65 terabytes (equivalent to about 15 thousand DVD).
To develop it, the scientists of theclass = "discreet" > Cinvestav invested, with the support of the National Council of science and technology (Conacyt), 18 million pesos.
